Writing their first name and exposure to a variety of literature and print is very useful. Tying shoes, buttoning and zipping are also very helpful! The more experiences your child has, the more confident and prepared he/she will be.
-
Do not fret! Children progress in reading and writing at their own pace! They will let you know when they are ready to move forward or take some time enjoying what they already know. It is important that you support and encourage your child's first reading and writing interests. A child who loves collecting and categorizing bugs can be supported by a variety of bug books from the local library. He/she might also enjoy labeling the bug collection. Refrigerator letter magnets, labeling things in a child's room and a ritual bed time story are wonderful ways to support and introduce your child to literacy!
-
Classroom volunteers are a must in the early grades! Parents can be reading volunteers or help with centers. We have parents who can commit weekly and some monthly. A child's love and thirst for learning soars when he/she sees mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, etc. involved in school! Outside the classroom, parents can make phone calls, create learning materials, provide snacks and donations.
-
Reinforcing a child's school learning at home is very important. Those students who experience a strong home-school connection are more enthusiastic and self-motivated. Homework is given to strengthen a child's abilities and reinforce basic skills.
